/The work

The wish to look deep down, to understand what at first seems difficult, is a feeling that brings adrenaline and instils fear at the same time. The shape of each plate stands for a different bathymetric line of the Atlantic sea floor, and within them the incised marks reinterpret the fauna and flora that inhabit these little-known places — places that are, for that very reason, comparable to the dimension of the unconscious. To discover new dimensions and then realise that our certainties were, precisely, only ours, is traumatic, but necessary to our growth.

Aliqua re Incipio also opens a reflection on the relationship between plate and print. Printmaking is often taken to mean the making of an intaglio print, and the support that allows it seems to be forgotten. Without the plate there would be no final result; showing the two side by side is a chance to bring out what is particular to each material, the paper and the zinc, and to appreciate differently what they share and what belongs more readily to one “version” or the other.
